  5. Assignment 1 RELIGION ...

Week 10 Assignment Instructions (available in the Week 10 folder, along with the rubric):

Assignment 1: World View Chart Writing Assignment
Due Week 10 and worth 235 points

This assignment uses the information you have gathered for your weekly World View Chart Assignments. Choose one (1) category (origin of all things, nature of god, view of human nature, view of good and evil, etc.) from the chart to focus on for this assignment. Consider how the selected aspect relates to each of the religions covered and to your own social or work experiences.

Write a two to three (2-3) page paper in which you:

  1. Select one (1) category from the completed World View Chart. Provide a rationale for choosing this category.
  2. Describe the selected content and explain the significance of the selected category across the religions studied.
  3. Provide one (1) specific example of how the selected category is manifested in your social environment.
  4. Use at least three (3) quality resources as references for the assignment and document your sources using APA Style for in-text citations and references. Note:Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.
  5. Write clearly and coherently using correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, and mechanics.

Your assignment must:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Analyze what is meant by religion.
  • Analyze the similarities and differences in the primary beliefs held by major religious traditions and the cultures in which these religions evolved.
  • Describe the varieties of religious experience and practice in a wide range of cultures.
  • Recognize how daily life within various religions and current affairs are influenced by religion.
  • Develop written pieces that demonstrate an analysis of a topic relevant to the course.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in religion.
  • Write clearly and concisely about world religions using proper writing mechanics.

Here are a couple of things to remember:

  • Make certain you’ve read over the instructions carefully and reviewed the rubric that used for grading (you can find them both in the Week 10 folder).  I recently had a decent paper turned in, but it was not within the guidelines of the instructions and I wasn’t able to give much credit for it.  I don’t want that to happen to you!
  • Keep in mind that it’s just 2-3 pages, so once you’ve outlined your paper and started on the main body of it, it will go by very quickly if you’re doing it right.

Here’s a basic outline that might help you in writing the paper:

    • Introduction
      • Make certain to clearly state which category you’re doing and include your rationale on why you chose the category you did (View of God, Celebrations/Holidays, etc.)
    • Examples from the Religions Covered in the Chart
      • This will probably be about 80% of your paper.
      • Review the category on your chart by looking at what each religion believes or practices concerning that category.
      • Give concrete examples.  For example, if your category is celebrations/holidays, don’t just say “Judaism has many holidays.”  You’ll need to actually state what those holidays are and give a little detail about what those are and what they look like.
      • Based on previous courses, this is usually where most of the points are taken off.  If you review the rubric you’ll see that you’re expected to cover each of the religions on your chart, not just one or two.  If you only cover a few it greatly impacts your grade on the paper because this is the bulk of your assignment.
    • Example from your own Experience
      • You’ll give a personal story in this part.  For example, if you are doing “View of Salvation” and once had a conversation about salvation with your Buddhist co-workers, that would be a good conversation to summarize and include in the paper.  You can also do something from your own religion.  For example, if you are a Christian or grew up in a Christian church, you could present something about salvation within Christianity based on what you’ve seen and heard from your experience.
      • It’s possible to work this section into the previous section, so feel free to do that if it works better for your paper.
    • Conclusion
      • This will probably just be a quick concluding paragraph.
    • Works Cited or Bibliography
      • Make certain this section is formatted correctly.
      • Make certain you’ve been citing material throughout the paper as you use sources.
      • Remember that failure to cite sources is plagiarism and will result in an automatic zero for the assignment, so be particularly careful.
