Sometime between this morning (Monday) and Thursday night at 11:59 pm, you have to acquire via purchase, lease, rent, or borrow the original 1960 version of Alfred Hitchcock’s horror classic Psycho and view it. Your assignment for viewing the movie, however, is probably different than any viewing you have ever done at the movies or in front of a DVD player.
Let me explain:
- You are studying Process Analysis as a mode of gathering information via research.
- You are studying Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Theory of Personality Development with a bent to the Phallic Stage.
- You are now viewing Psycho, not so much to entertain yourself with a horror classic, but to gather facts and other pertinent information about the main character, Norman Bates.
- Why? Because your assignment here is to explain the following:
“How the Norman Bates we meet in Psycho can best be explained from Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Theory of Personality Development.”
- Eventually (next week) you are going to begin the steps of writing a Process Analysis research paper on explaining this person as the sum total of his life to this point.
You should take notes during the movie so as to be able to remember exact details, both physical and abstract, that you can use in your presentation. As you take notes, be aware of the following areas:
- Room One (1) and the Parlor
- Conversations between Norman Bates and Arbogast
- Conversations between Norman and Sam
- Mother’s Bedroom and Norman’s Bedroom
